Aims and Objectives

To provide an accessible, central resource designed to support teaching and learning throughout the curriculum;

To encourage independent learning by promoting and supporting the development of all aspects of information-handling skills;

To promote positive attitudes towards reading (including reading for pleasure), literacy and lifelong learning;

to support the school's Quaker ethos by providing relevant, up-to-date information about Quaker beliefs and practices; by avoiding the promotion of resources which are at odds with basic Quaker tenets; and by developing an environment which is equally conducive to quiet reflection and open-minded debate.

Overview and Facilities

The library accommodation comprises of a suite of 6 rooms: fiction, non-fiction, reference, theatre and media studies, senior study room and resources room.

It has a seating capacity of 64 and has 12 computers plus a scanner and photocopier for pupils' use.

It is open from 9am – 5.30pm, Monday to Friday, and is staffed by a full-time librarian, 2 part-time assistants and a number of pupil helpers.

The library has over 14,500 books and also offers audio books, videos, DVDs, and on-line resources such as Eclipse.net which is web-based and allows students to search the library catalogue from any of the computers in the school. The library also stocks a range of newspapers and magazines, including foreign language publications.
How Students use the Library

The library offers a programme of induction lessons for Year 7 and other new pupils, including the Lower Sixth.

Students are actively encouraged to borrow books from the library. Books can also be purchased through the library, often arriving within a week and with a good discount.

Students in Years 7-9 visit the library at least once with their English teacher during the 2 week timetable. There is also a study skills programme for Years 7-8. Sixth Form students are welcome to use the library during study periods. The library is well used by all the departments to support research.
Clubs & Events

The library hosts a variety of clubs including book clubs and media clubs over lunchtimes.

The school participates in events such as the Berkshire Book Award, Berkshire Book Festival, World Book Day and Readathon.
- The library also organises a range of events throughout the school year including book sales and author visits.
