In September, new Deputy Head Edward Falshaw will be joining us. He is currently at Leighton Park as we undertake the important task of interviewing for three new Assistant Heads who will be joining the Leadership Group with him. We have interviewed for Heads of Boarding, Curriculum and Fryer. It has been wonderful to see the intense level of interest shown in these roles from applicants from both within and outside our community. I am particularly pleased that Edward has been able to spend three days on the Park to begin the process of assimilating into the Leadership team and life in general at the school. He visited Fryer and Grove houses, met with numerous staff, and enjoyed Collect. However, for both of us there was a particularly unique induction into a great Leighton Park tradition: House Music.
My word! I have been at schools which take House singing very seriously, and also where it is just a bit of fun. Here at Leighton Park, however, it is taken to a whole new level. The atmosphere is of a carnival. A cacophony of drums, whistles, vuvuzelas and pots and pans mixed with whoops, chants and cheers brought the Hall almost shaking to its foundations. And yet, the exuberance never once spilled over. The respect for the performers, and the encouragement and celebration of their efforts, is absolutely excellent. The standard and range of music is extraordinary. We were treated to exquisite solo performances on violin, cello, piano and one of only two Chinese dulcimers in the country. There were then compositions by students themselves ranging from heavy rock, acoustic guitar, and Ska funk. A variety of small ensembles then entertained before the house ensembles provided expertly choreographed dance backed by excellent musicianship. The energy and sheer fun of the evening still have me reeling. What a tremendous night! I have never witnessed anything like it in a school. I can only sum up what went on as a joyous outpouring of the spirit of Leighton Park.
