Deputy Heads visit and House Music

In September, new Deputy Head Edward Falshaw will be joining us. He is currently at Leighton Park as we undertake the important task of interviewing for three new Assistant Heads who will be joining the Leadership Group with him. We have interviewed for Heads of Boarding, Curriculum and Fryer. It has been wonderful to see the intense level of interest shown in these roles from applicants from both within and outside our community. I am particularly pleased that Edward has been able to spend three days on the Park to begin the process of assimilating into the Leadership team and life in general at the school. He visited Fryer and Grove houses, met with numerous staff, and enjoyed Collect. However, for both of us there was a particularly unique induction into a great Leighton Park tradition: House Music.

My word! I have been at schools which take House singing very seriously, and also where it is just a bit of fun. Here at Leighton Park, however, it is taken to a whole new level. The atmosphere is of a carnival. A cacophony of drums, whistles, vuvuzelas and pots and pans mixed with whoops, chants and cheers brought the Hall almost shaking to its foundations. And yet, the exuberance never once spilled over. The respect for the performers, and the encouragement and celebration of their efforts, is absolutely excellent. The standard and range of music is extraordinary. We were treated to exquisite solo performances on violin, cello, piano and one of only two Chinese dulcimers in the country. There were then compositions by students themselves ranging from heavy rock, acoustic guitar, and Ska funk. A variety of small ensembles then entertained before the house ensembles provided expertly choreographed dance backed by excellent musicianship. The energy and sheer fun of the evening still have me reeling. What a tremendous night! I have never witnessed anything like it in a school. I can only sum up what went on as a joyous outpouring of the spirit of Leighton Park.

Weekend Activities

Staff, students and parents supported the Rugby Sevens team in the first ever Leighton Park Invitational Sevens event on Saturday morning. Teams from Gordon’s, Licensed Victuallers and Halliford made the trip, and after some very competitive rugby Leighton Park ran out deserved winners in the final against the Gordon’s B team. Housemaster Simon Cain had decided to organise the event as a curtain-raiser to the national schools’ sevens tournament at Rosslyn Park. Under bright sunshine, the teams played with spirit, passion and sportsmanship to make this inaugural tournament a success in every respect.

Sunday saw the Park basking in unseasonal warm sunshine. It is a real privilege to live on the Park, and the boarding community is fortunate to enjoy the facilities and the environment as Spring begins. The resident Canada geese had particular reason to celebrate spring. Two large eggs nestle in a secret location, and we hope that they will not suffer the attention of foxes in the coming weeks. The recent clearance of the environment by the pond is the first phase of development in a programme to enhance this wonderful natural resource for the purpose of education and enjoyment for our own community and hopefully, in the future, visiting primary schools. A continuation of the natural wildlife population is enormously encouraging. Our stewardship of the campus is a vital part of what we do here.

Visit to former Head, Bill Spray

I made a particularly enjoyable visit to Oxford today in order to meet Bill Spray, former Head of Leighton Park. Bill celebrated his 90th birthday earlier this term, and received a beautiful print of Old School by the artist Herbert Levi (Old Leightonian), as well as an Old Leightonian “Live Adventurously” mug.

Bill and Christine, his wife, were full of reminiscences of their days at Leighton Park, and the various people with whom they had shared their time here. It was remarkable to spend time chatting about the past, but Bill also has a very keen interest in the continuation of the Quaker ethos and values at school. Bill and Christine were delighted with the gifts, and to hear news of the school as it is today: happy and thriving.

Music and Sport

The sun shone on a day of sporting and musical success at Leighton Park, with students at all levels making the most of their opportunities. I witnessed a commanding performance by the Fryer rugby team as they won comfortably against Pangbourne. This result means that the team has enjoyed an undefeated season: what an achievement!

Meanwhile Leighton Park teams enjoyed success in boys’ hockey and girls’ netball fixtures. In the evening a large number of staff, students and parents enjoyed a wonderful range of music from groups of all ages within the school. From a troupe of Fryer drummers, to a jazz funk band, and even two operatic cats (!), the audience was kept well entertained for over two hours. The scope of the programme was very impressive, and the commitment of the many individual staff who support our young musicians is a joy to behold.
