Curriculum  >  Year 9

Year 9

In Year 9 (age 13 - 14) pupils continue to follow a broad curriculum which builds on their previous learning, and extends well beyond the National Curriculum, comprising:

  • English
  • ICT
  • geography
  • French
  • art or latin
  • DT
  • RE (Beliefs and Values)
  • Spanish (for those joining in Year 9)
  • maths
  • sciences (chemistry, biology and physics)
  • history
  • music
  • drama
  • PE and games
  • PSHE
  • German

Setting

In English, maths and French pupils are set according to their experience and ability. This provides a clear starting point from which each pupil can progress at a pace appropriate to them.

Additional Information

  • ICT: Pupils wishing to study Latin rather than ICT at this stage are encouraged to continue ICT as an after school activity. They may still take ICT as a GCSE option.
  • Sciences: are taught as separate subjects - chemistry, biology and physics - to encourage pupils to develop as wide a scientific experience as possible.
  • Languages: Most pupils moving up from Year 8 choose to continue to study German as a second language, whilst those joining in Year 9 wishing to study a second language often study Spanish.

Educational trips

These are an important element in many subjects and recent visits have included, for example, French exchanges, Imperial War Museum, theatre trips.

Choosing GCSEs

All subjects studied in Year 9 (except PSHE and games) can be taken on to GCSE. A detailed booklet for parents which outlines GCSE options available is distributed at a Year 9 Consultation Evening to inform parents and pupils in their discussions with staff.

At Leighton Park there is no expectation on pupils to be 'the same': their individuality is valued and seen as a strength.
