Environmental Awareness

Teaming up to save the planet!

Environmental awareness is an important part of life at LP. Quakers seek to maintain the beauty and variety of the world. LP is not just a school in a park, but a park with a school in it. The environment features prominently across the curriculum and pupils address environmental issues in activities such as the Save the Planet group.

ISSPLP has been awarded the Bronze Eco-School Award and are now working towards Silver; as part of this the Save the Planet group, in conjunction with the Science Department, have carried out an environmental review and created an action plan which has been shared with the school community. In 2008, the Environmental Resident at LP organised an inter-house energy saving competition.

LP is also pleased to be part of the Independent State School Partnership. This exciting project involves pupils from Kendrick, Reading Girls, Blessed Hugh Faringdon, Prospect College and Leighton Park. This aims to build effective partnerships involving students, teachers, the wider community and commercial groups to support the raising of achievement and progression. Whilst the focus of this work is on science and the environment, it is also designed to raise awareness of links to other curriculum subjects.

LP recently hosted an Environment Day with the young people taking park in environmental surveys in the park and designing and building a reflector to heat water. Each school has been donated a solar panel and they will be sharing their initial ideas on how this technology could be applied within their schools.
