Inspection Reports

The Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) and Commission for Social Care (CSCI) both inspected Leighton Park in November 2004. Their reports praise both the quality of teaching and pastoral care.

ISI reported: "Leighton Park is highly successful in providing an education of good quality in a strongly Quaker ethos.  Pupils achieve well academically in relation to their abilities, while experiencing rich opportunities for their personal and social development."

Other key findings, include:

  • At A level, although the ability range here is broader than that of maintained selective (grammar) schools, on both points score and higher grades measures, Leighton Park has consistently performed higher than the averages for those (grammar) schools - a remarkable tribute to the quality of learning and teaching.

  • A strong sense of community, shared by parents, pupils and staff, provides an environment where all pupils have opportunity and encouragement to develop their own individuality while learning to take responsibility for others.

  • Very good relations with staff and pupils foster good attitudes to learning, which contribute to good levels of attainment in most subjects, and to success for pupils in achieving their chosen destinations in higher education.

  • The hard working staff, teaching and non-teaching, are deeply committed to providing the best for pupils, and give their time generously to that end.

  • A rich variety of extra-curricular activities significantly enriches the education of pupils

CSCI inspection

The Commission for Social Care inspected boarding at Leighton Park:

  • In summary, the report states: "This was a very positive inspection. There was good evidence that staff care about the children and young people they are looking after and strive to do a good job."

  • In response to a confidential questionnaire to boarders and their parents, the summary concluded, the overwhelming majority felt that they were happy and well cared for.  Parents were very satisfied with the care their children received, particularly the ethos, the pastoral care, the extra-curricular life and the good relationships between staff and pupils.

  • Of the 48 national minimum boarding standards inspected, all were met or almost met, with several exceeded.
