Music

Awards may be made at each level i.e. Junior (Year 7), Senior (Year 9), Sixth Form (see Scholarships for further details).

The music scholarship exams are held in January and the closing date for 2011/12 applications is 22nd November 2010.  There is no written examination as awards are made for practical musical accomplishments; the emphasis is on musical potential as well as prior musical achievement.

Scholars are expected to play a full and active role in the musical life of the department, including participation in the choir and orchestra and at least one other ensemble. They would normally be expected to select music as a subject at GCSE and would be strongly encouraged to select music or music technology at both AS and A2 level.

Requirements

The emphasis is on musical potential not musical achievement alone. Associated Board practical exams are a useful indicator, but other factors will also be considered.

Interviews

Candidates will be encouraged to talk generally about their musical experience and ambitions; to demonstrate evidence of widening musical interests; and to complete some aural tests.

Candidates must offer two instruments, or more, including voice. Two contrasting pieces should be prepared for the first instrument offered and one for each subsequent instrument.

Auditory test: Candidates will be required to take a general listening test (approximately 15 minutes) in order to assess their musical potential.
