Discipline
A well-established framework of rewards and sanctions exists which is not dissimilar, in many respects, to that you would expect to find in any good school. However, it is our approach to discipline that makes us distinctive. We view discipline as a positive opportunity for growth and development rather than an end in itself.
Rewards, encouragement and positive comments help create an environment where sanctions can be kept to a minimum. Discipline is based upon trust, mutual support and seeking to promote the positive, within clearly defined expectations, and the acceptance of individual responsibility - values drawn from the Quaker roots of the school.
Why it works?
It is the deep sense of mutual respect that exists between staff and pupils that makes our approach possible. When things go wrong, staff are there to provide guidance and support. They take the time to listen to pupils' opinions: we believe pupils are entitled to reasons, explanation and discussion, which in turn encourages self-discipline. We always seek to respond fairly and consistently.
Of course, this sort of approach takes time, which means that on occasion things may take a little longer to resolve, but it works because we make the time to listen, and the resolutions are therefore longer-lasting. In this way there is no contradiction between the highest academic aspirations set for pupils, and the dedicated pastoral care provided by staff.
