The first Artist Spotlight of 2020 shines a light on Bertha in Year 11. The display space in Oakview Restaurant showcases a variety of pieces from Bertha, created in response to her travels in Turkey and a recent visit to Kew Gardens.
Sampled from her GCSE portfolio, the work on display explores techniques of drypoint etching and mono-type printing, alongside recent collage work. There is a playful honesty to her work, simply enjoying the process of layering up text and image, lines and colours.
One wall in the space relays repeated coloured lines to form a street in Istanbul, taking on an almost 3D effect, highlighting the meticulous process of building lines into an etching plate.
As Bertha begins to prepare for the course finale, she has turned her focus to look at ‘crowds’. Maybe the serenity of the Park can add the necessary contrast and respite to think clearly and notice how each line, dot or person is a unique part of that crowd.
The display adds a contemporary backdrop to the bustling foyer, en route to lunch, giving a glimpse into a sketchbook midway through completion.
