Autumn Sports Highlights

This term has seen a more than healthy share of sporting successes, sheer determination and tremendous teamwork. However, perhaps most exciting of all was the Super Wednesday triumph of 10th November which marked eight victories in eight fixtures across football, hockey and rugby!

131 fixtures have been played this term. In December, LP’s winning ways continued as history was made on the rugby pitch; in 2019, the 1st XV team suffered a 52-12 loss by Burnham Grammar. Two years on, they returned with high hopes. Within the first two minutes, the first try of the game was scored by Leighton Park. This was the start of what became a 55-7 redemption. A sweet victory to finish an unbelievable season.

Coach and Geography Teacher, Ellie Smales, applauded “A huge finish to a great season, which showed real character throughout. Some brilliant play from the Cook brothers, with some fantastic lines out to our backs which ensured a healthy score line. The forwards, as ever, were ruthless in pursuit of the ball, and showed no mercy against their defensive line. What better way to finish the season than with a celebratory McDonalds for our departing Upper Sixth. It’s been a privilege to coach you all this season.” Another rugby highlight included the U15As taking the GoPerform league title on Tuesday 7th December.

Within the confines of the Park, friendly rivalry between the Houses is as strong as ever. In October, Field secured the win for Senior House Badminton followed by School and Reckitt in joint second place as they played girls singles, boys singles, and mixed doubles matches. To end the term, incredible effort was later shown in the House Hockey and Rugby matches, as well as the staff v student showdown.

In terms of individual achievements, Mia in the Upper Sixth had a fantastic start to the academic year when she was offered a place on the 2021-23 Youth Talent Programme for distance running. This is the first step on the England Talent pathway; a fantastic development in her running journey! Mia has most recently competed at the British Athletics Cross Challenge in Liverpool which doubled up as the European Cross-Country Trials.

Another student delighted to be put forward for trials this term was Lower Sixth Sports Scholar, Albie. Last month, Albie competed in the Boys’ U18 Squad trials for the English Schools’ Football Association. Meanwhile, fellow Scholar, Jack in Year 11 was selected to play in the U16 Berkshire Schools FA, whilst Harry was selected for the London Irish Developing Player Programme (DPP). In hockey, Oli in Year 10 is on the road to elite play, having been enrolled on the England Hockey Performance Centre Programme; a huge achievement!
