Be Careful What you Wish For: LP’s Next Big Show!

The LP community sat with bated breath during Collect this morning as the Music, Drama and Dance Departments delivered their big reveal for the 2026 school production: Stephen Sondheim’s fantastic musical, ‘Into The Woods’.

Running from 10th – 13th February students in Year 10 and above will be intertwining several well-known fairy tales, all cleverly reimagined and innovative delivered as a single, darker narrative. What begins so innocently as a simple wish for each of the characters in ‘Into the Woods’ sends them on a journey that changes them forever and where their happily ever after endings are nothing like the ones they’d imagined. The key stories featured include ‘Cinderella’, ‘Jack & the Beanstalk’, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ and ‘Rapunzel’ but here there are threatening aspects tinging the classic fairy tales and some new characters in the form of the Baker and his wife are needed to go ‘into the woods’ to lift a family curse and tie the other stories together.

Stephen Sondheim, often called the master of the modern musical, created songs that challenge performers and captivate audiences. ‘Into the Wood’s is one of his most iconic works; clever, haunting, magical, and packed with razor-sharp lyrics,  complex harmonies and opportunities to shine.

Jessica Wittert van Hoogland, Director of Drama, enthused: “Our musical choice for this year is intended to ignite students’ creativity through an exciting and magical retelling of timeless tales, woven together by music, heart, and the thrill of storytelling on stage.  I have no doubt our Leighton Park students will inspire us with their innovative ideas and talents as we travel together ‘Into the Woods’.

Rosemary Scales, Director of Music & Media, added, “We are really excited to be taking on the challenge of some of Sondheim’s most intricate and challenging music for singers and instrumentalists alike. In true Sondheim style, his blend of rapid lyrics and intricate harmonies is something we can’t wait to get started on. ‘Into the Woods’ is a thrilling piece that demands precision, creativity, and collaboration—and we know our students will rise to the occasion. This promises to be a memorable production and a true celebration of Sondheim’s genius.”

Head of Dance, Beth Butler, expressed, “We are looking forward to thoughtfully integrating contemporary and lyrical choreography into this musical. Contemporary will suit the emotional nuance  of the work. It will be an opportunity to be creative in order to express character, story and themes. We can’t wait to get started. ”

Previous Leighton Park musicals have included ‘West Side Story’ and ‘Guys and Dolls’, and are a highlight of the School calendar. We’re excited to share this amazing show next year and look forward to the auditions in the Autumn Term!
