Black History Month Launch

The Lower Sixth History A Level group took Fryer Collect on Monday 26th September to launch October’s Black History Month on the Park. Committed to raising awareness of the bias in western history, the group discussed the need to recognise that black lives and workers have helped forge the foundations of Western prosperity and that even today Black history is still erased and blackness is still persecuted.

With their presentation on hugely successful, but perhaps lesser known, black figures such as the sculptor, Edmonia Lewis, and the musician and actress, Hazel Scott, the group offered students in Years 7 and 8 some great entertainment as well as important education. The senior students were keen to communicate that Black History Month this year is focusing not just on famous figures, but everyday black people and their stories with the theme for 2022 ‘Time for Change: Action, not Words’. They encouraged everyone to understand the need to work together in order to make their voices heard by those with the power to make a difference.

The Collect ended with the announcement of the LP Black History Month competition with options for writing 500 words on a historically inspired story of a black individual, drawing or painting a piece of artwork that is inspired by historic black artwork or the creation of a mood board about a period of important black history. We are looking forward to seeing what our talented Fryers come up with after such an inspiring Collect!
