Chinese Culture in the Capital

40 Mandarin enthusiasts from Years 7 to 10 came together on Saturday 26th June to enjoy a cultural trip to London discovering ancient Chinese heritage and current popular customs.

Their visit took in the Asia and China Exhibition Halls 33, 33B and 95  in the British Museum where they were able to discover the history of the country and ancient works of art including jade, prints and drawings. They then headed to a lunch of 12 dishes of traditional food at an authentic Chinese restaurant in Chinatown and some time to explore this exciting area.

Daisy (Year 8) said, “I found the Mandarin trip very fun but also educational. At the British Museum I learnt about the military culture of China and the jade. I especially enjoyed walking through the jade part because it was very pretty and I learnt a lot about how it was made.”

Eva (Year 8) commented, “I learnt about the history of Asia and about art that comes from Asia. In the museum, my favourite part was the Jade Room as it was very pretty and intricate. The food was very good and we all really enjoyed it. My favourite part was going around China Town in small groups. We got to buy souvenirs and also went and bought Chinese snacks. We all liked this part! I really enjoyed the Mandarin Trip.”

Lan Worral, Head of Mandarin, reflected, ““They were all very excited and tried their best to practice their Chinese there”.

“I would recommend this trip to everyone because it was so fun!” concluded Daisy.

The School teaches a carousel of languages in Year 7 including French, Spanish, German and Mandarin. At Year 8s all students continue with Spanish and have a choice of a second language option, giving them a choice to continue with two languages at GCSE in Year 10 and 11 if they wish.
