Dazzling David Hammond, Head of Science, launched British Science Week 2026 with a very sparkly gold jacket, a science quiz Collect and some impressive Gladiator graphics for his two teams: teachers vs scholars! The six contestants faced one question each submitted from students across the school who were curious about how or why certain scientific phenomenon exist. The scores were decided on the volume of the audience’s applause, despite excellent answers from all involved!
David commented: “British Science Week gives students the chance to express their own interests and explore things that are beyond the curriculum for all age groups and this year for the first time we are having a student-led exhibition of their individual projects.”
STEAM Co-Ordinator, Rachel Milhofer, explained that the idea for the exhibition had come from the Scholars who were keen to share their work with other students and raise the profile of STEAM across the community.
STEAM Scholar, Harry (Lower Sixth), reflected: “It is very good at inspiring a new generation of students across the school, especially the younger people who might not have seen what Leighton Park has to offer. Leighton Park is a good place to foster your interests in multiple aspects throughout science, technology and engineering.” “This exhibition really shows what diverse amount of science is in LP. A lot of people who are here go to STEAM Club which is where I built this. We do a lot of fun science there.” added Freya (Year 9). “It inspires people to choose what careers they want to do in the future and achieve an understanding of different aspects of STEAM across multiple careers.” concluded Ben (Year 11)
David elaborated on the plans for the week saying: “This year’s theme is ‘Curiosity, What’s Your Question?’ so we are looking at eggs across our different science departments. In Biology we are looking at what came first, the chicken or the egg, in Physics we are looking at the physical nature of eggs because they are such an amazing construction of engineering and in Chemistry we are looking at the essential chemistry of eggs.”
Even Oakview restaurant joined in the fun with their fantastic planets display and a marvellous mountain of a volcano cake, spouting dry ice steam down its chocolatey slopes and filled with custard lava!
