Festive Final Collect 2024

The last Collect of the Autumn term was filled with students eager to celebrate the achievements accumulated since September. As they entered Main Hall on Friday 13th December the silverware shone, reflecting the lights of the Christmas tree, and the meeting got off to a festive start with Alanna’s (Year XX) seasonal rendition of ‘Have yourself a merry little Christmas’.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award report from Richard Duckett, Duncan Laurie-Pile and Theresa McConalogue announced the upcoming DofE Awards Ceremony in March and celebrated 24 Bronze, 12 Silver and three Gold Award successes.

In Dance Anya Nash and Beth Butler, Dance teachers, recognised multiple NATD individual achievement and presented cups for the nine NATD Performance Awards, all of whom gained Distinction in their examinations.

Drama was next up with Jessica Wittert van Hoogland awarding certificates for outstanding participation in the Senior School and Lauren Brandwood, the Juniors.

The Reinstein-Alldis Award was presented to Maxi (Year 7) and Freddie (Upper Sixth) by Director of Music and Media, Rosemary Scales for excellent musical progress. This award was created in 2013 by two Old Leightonians, Dominic Alldis and Dan Reinstein, who believe passionately in the power of music.

The Sports Review delivered reports on rugby from Ellie Smales and Hockey from Matt Richards with Simon Bradbury, Director of Sport covering the range of 120 fixtures from the term. In additional to the matches and training the department have enjoyed several highlights including netball trip to Barcelona, a boarders’ trip to see Reading Rockets, an Under the Lights Hockey match and a KS2 Football festival. The elite athletes across the school were celebrated for their sporting achievements and are supported through the Advanced Performer Programme (APP) to continue to achieve their best at national, regional and county levels.

House competition prizes were awarded for Chess (Bentsi-Enchill) and Essay Writing (Tubman) followed by the Sissons Cup for Co-Curricular activities going to Bentsi-Enchill, the Castle Trophy for academic achievements picked up by Bentsi-Enchill and the Dunstan Award for strong community and Quaker values going to Cadbury with the overall winners of this term’s Merit Cup were Tubman. A new House Badge system was also introduced this term with the first recipients of Gold House Badges going to Sixth Form students who have each gone above and beyond for their Houses.

The assembly was dismissed after the Head’s address, a reading of Maya Angelou’s peace poem, another lovely musical interlude of ‘Winter Wonderland’ by Funktion 13 and the lighthearted edit of the LP Christmas Video 2024 with a couple of exclusive scenes just for Final Collect wishing everyone a happy holiday!
