Finding A Pudding Fit for the Queen

In order to work up an appetite for Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, the Food Technology Department put out a call to find A Pudding Fit for the Queen. On Friday 6th May, Head, Matthew Judd, baked his way to dessert royalty as he was crowned king of the kitchen for creating a glorious banoffee alaska that fit the bill.

Joining Matthew on the day to share their sweet treats with Leighton Park’spanel of culinary experts, were seven contestants comprised of students, staff and parents, chosen after submitting their recipes and impressing Jennifer Hatton, Food Technology Teacher.

Prepared for the day was Year 7 student, Chloe, who had done her homework on the Queen’s own sweet tooth. Having discovered that chocolate cake is a firm favourite with Her Majesty, Chloe’s inspired trifle incorporated chocolate sponge, chocolate mousse, strawberry coulis, peaches and strawberries.

“I’ve been baking for a few years now” commented Chloe. “I like to do it with my friends who also really like cooking, so I thought I’d just give the competition a go!”

On the other side of the kitchen impressing judge, successful chef and restaurateur, Jesse Dunford Wood, Queenie in Year 10 based her pudding around a méringue crown. Jesse, who is an Old Leightonian, owns popular London restaurant, Parlour, and recently took on Six Portland Road.

Also delivering on their desserts was parent, Natasha, with her chocolate cake, Year 9 student, Alanna, baking a black forest gateau, Year 7 student, Ruth, with her Union Jack brownies, Matron of Field House, Jan Bell, trialling an altered recipe for her treacle sponge and Textiles Teacher, Debbie Ince, perfecting a beautiful cheesecake. Jennie enthused, “It has been a delightful experience and it’s so lovely to see such a variety of cooking going on.”

Whilst several Food Preparation and Nutrition GCSE students had the pleasure of anonymously choosing their favourite pud on the grounds of taste, trusted Catering Manager, Alessandro Albanese, joined Jennie and Jesse, to judge the contestants on the criteria of; originality and creativity, accuracy and ability, cleanliness and safe working, and the ability to be reproduced in Oakview and served on Friday 27th May, for all to enjoy!
