Going for Gold: DofE Expeditioners in the Peak District

The DofE programme at Leighton Park, run by our dedicated Outdoor Education Manager, Isaac Walker, enables students to live adventurously whilst bolstering their Quaker values. The programme encourages volunteering, skills development, physical activity and an expedition at Bronze, Silver and Gold levels, all of which are supported through out co-curricular programme.

The 17th to the 21st October saw our Upper Sixth Gold Expedition groups head to the Peak District, a beautiful area of the English countryside, where hills (and rain!) are abundant. As a National Park with significant inclines the area is challenging for walkers but also relatively safe for those who have been appropriately trained. The groups have undertaken instruction over the last few months in preparation for their adventure and many of them have also completed their Bronze and/or Silver awards as well.

Starting from Pindale Farm near Castleton and finishing at Stanage Edge the students camped at commercial campsites rather than wild camping but were responsible for planning and providing their expedition menu. Fortunately everyone was able to demonstrate their capabilities with a Trangia and didn’t go hungry! The weather was intermittently wet but Storm Ashley didn’t defeat the groups and they managed the last leg along the ridge in good time on the Monday.

Congratulations to everyone who took part!
