From George Michael and Paul McCartney to Phil Ramone and the Ting Tings to Matt Cardle and Declan Donovan, OL James Jackman’s (G1990) extraordinary musical career encompassed writing, programming, arranging, remixing and producing music from classical, jazz, drum and bass, hip hop, house, indie and mainstream pop. James now regularly produces music and soundscapes for a number of the biggest labels in production music; recent commissioned clients included the BBC, Channel 4 Films, Universal Pictures, Digitas (Pringles World Cup ad campaign) and Lifeworks. With George Michael, he co-wrote music for the hugely successful movie “Last Christmas”.
James was George Michael’s right-hand man for 20 years. As his programmer, co-producer, arranger and co-songwriter James developed and refined his music production and song-writing alongside one of the finest artists the UK has produced. James’s writing and production credits for George Michael include worldwide number one albums and singles and two sell out world tours.
James’s musical career started at Leighton Park as a regular member of the LP big band and jazz band: he has fond memories of House Music competition when his House (Grove) won it in his final year. He recalls singing and playing sax for Gerry Rafferty’s “Baker Street” in the small group. He adds “We were then asked to play that again to close the competition. It was a great night which I remember fondly.”
After finishing school James studied Music and Performing Arts at Middlesex University and following that, lectured for 3 years in Music Technology at Newham College of Further Education in London. In the late 90s, he was part of the trip hop/drum and bass act Trigger, signed to Virgin. James then started working full time as a songwriter, programmer and producer in the music industry.
