ISA Film Making Competition Winner!

Congratulations to Dylan (Lower Sixth) for his success in the Independent Schools’ Association (ISA) Film & Animation Competition. Celebrated as the winner of the KS5 Category for his short film, ‘Unheard’, Dylan has created an outstanding piece of work that is absolutely gripping.

Reece Kelly-Gould, Head of Film and TV at Leighton Park, commented: “Dylan’s film immediately stands out as a bold and experimental piece of work. I was particularly impressed by his confident use of post-production techniques. His implementation of montage editing and glitch effects not only showcases technical skill but also creates a dynamic visual rhythm that feels fresh and original. There’s a clear directorial vision behind the piece; each frame feels intentional, and the editing choices serve to amplify the mood and message. What’s most exciting, though, is Dylan’s initiative. He picked up a camera, ventured out, and created something that pushes boundaries. That kind of proactive, independent filmmaking is what the future of this industry is all about. I’m immensely proud of Dylan for putting himself out there and look forward to the many creative projects he is yet to complete here at LP.”

The ISA invited submissions of students’ own moving image work in any genre, from digital animation and stop motion, to silent film, documentary or video art. They encouraged participants to “be creative about the type of film you choose to make, think carefully about how you will use camera angles, lighting, sound (or absence of sound) and editing to get the message of your film across, and to make sure your image and sound quality are clear.”

Reece, who teaches BTEC Level 2 Creative Digital Media and BTEC Level 3 Television and Film Production as well as running several co-curricular clubs in film-making, reflected on the popularity of his subject: “Filmmaking at Leighton Park is thriving because it empowers students to tell stories that matter. It’s an art form where creative control, technical skill, and personal expression collide and that’s hugely compelling for young people with something to say. Our students know that film can challenge, inspire, entertain, and provoke. Great films have cultural relevance; they reflect the world we live in, often with striking honesty and originality.

It’s also a future-facing discipline. While AI might change some creative industries, the spark of human storytelling in film is irreplaceable. We’re lucky to have an outstanding department at LP, where students gain hands-on experience using industry-standard equipment like Blackmagic cinema cameras, professional lighting rigs, and high-fidelity audio gear. They’re not just learning theory, they’re directing, shooting, and editing films that look and feel professional.

Plus, with so many major studios and production companies in the Reading area, inspiration is right on our doorstep. It’s not uncommon for our students to have friends or relatives working in the industry—it makes the dream feel possible. Film & TV at LP is exciting, dynamic, and rooted in the real world. It’s how learning should feel: adventurous, collaborative, and full of possibility.”
