Jumping for Joy in the Maths Kangaroo!

Four skilled mathematicians in Year 8 were pleased to receive the brilliant results of their Maths Kangaroo earlier this week. A national competition run by UK Maths Trust (UKMT), the Kangaroo is open to competitors who successful achieve high enough marks in the Junior Maths Challenge. Isaac, Daniel, Oliver and Carlo tackled the Kangaroo which consists of 25 problems presented in multiple choice format with the added time pressure of just 60 minutes to complete the test.

Mary Boyd, Head of Maths, shared the UKMT’s insights into the competition, explaining that “Both the Junior Maths Challenge and the subsequent Kangaroo encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems. The problems are designed to make students think and to challenge those with more experience.”

The Maths competitions available to Leighton Park students form part of the School’s commitment to an exceptional education in STEAM (Science Technology Engineering the Arts and Maths) as creative habits of mind are melded with logical process to solve complex problems. This cross-curricular approach is a real strength of the School and led to the national Award for Excellence in STEAM Education in 2020.
