On Friday 13th March students from Years 7-10 had the opportunity to work with Jemima Brown from James Cousins Dance Company. James’ piece ‘Within Her Eyes’ is a prescribed professional work on the AQA specification so this workshop really brought the piece to life and gave students an insight into the choreographic approaches James used.
Students were challenged with movement phrases which allowed them to explore different dynamic qualities. This challenge then developed into contact work. Students learnt the importance of trust in contact work and how size of individuals is not the most important factor to consider when exploring taking each other’s weight. It was really inspiring for students to learn movement which they had analysed theoretically from the work.
Keen dancer, Flick, in Year 9 commented “It was a really great experience to learn and perform with someone who is a professional in the dance industry. I really enjoyed listening to her talk to us about her career.
Albie, who currently studies GCSE Dance continued “I really enjoy the contact work and learning new ways of lifting in Dance.”
By the end of the workshop Year 10 students felt extremely secure with their understanding of the piece; its choreographic intention and use of constituent features such as lighting, camera and physical setting. Year 9 students who have opted for GCSE are now even more excited about studying this dance as part of the course.
One of these students, Jessy, remarked “It was a privilege to work with students from the Senior School and I am keen to now opt for GCSE when the time arrives.”
