Little Hands and Big Hearts

Volunteering for ‘Petites Mains & Grand Coeur’, Thomas in the Lower Sixth has been going to his local hospital, Saint Antoine in Paris, to cut fabric which is then turned into scrubs for medical staff.

Explaining the process behind the product, Thomas commented “I went to the hospital in order to cut materials to make gowns for the medical staff who are suffering from a shortage. I had the basic material. We then cut it out to shape and then sewed it together. The cloth is taken to a tailor who stitches the scrubs.”

Another student making a difference is Jaia in Year 9. What started as an idea to help immediate family, including her brother and parents, has now grown into a project that has facilitated her grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins and more.

Reflecting on the beginning of lockdown Jaia commented, “Me and my mum were watching the news a lot and seeing how hard it was for people to get hold of masks. We managed to get a lot of fabric and wanted to send out as many to family members and friends and as we could.”

These tokens have proved invaluable for Jaia’s two aunties especially, who are key workers, employed respectively as a nurse on the Covid 19 wards and as a social worker. Despite their vital roles in the community, before receiving masks from Jaia and her mother, it had proven difficult to source the PPE through other means, for themselves and their families.

In total, the mother and daughter team have created over 70 face masks! Working together, Jaia and her mum have got more efficient with each one, dividing tasks individually and then rotating their responsibilities. They have enjoyed the grateful responses from family and friends, which has included lots of photos from Jaia’s younger cousins sporting their masks.
