LP Mock Elections 2019

In response to Parliament Week and the run up to the 2019 General Election, the School held its very own Mock Election Day. Each of the Prospective Parliamentary Candidates, representing major political parties, took their turn to deliver manifestos as part of Hustings, before voting took place on Thursday 12th December.

Representing Labour was Tomi (Lower Sixth), campaigning for Liberal Democrats was Letitia (Upper Sixth), Going for Green was Izzy (Lower Sixth), Backing Brexit was Harrison (Lower Sixth), representing Conservatives was Joe (Upper Sixth) and Shaun (Upper Sixth) was our Independent Candidate.

Together with their Election Agent and Campaigns Officer, the Candidates presented convincing arguments for their campaigns, supported by posters and Party-Political Broadcasts. In the final run up to Election Day, the parties caught the attention of remaining potential supporters, by canvassing staff and students during break and lunch time.

With all students, academic and administrative staff eligible to vote in the Mock Election Day, the School community turned out in their hoards to designated Polling Stations. Once polling cards were collected and counted, Eddie Falshaw, Deputy Head, acting as The Returning Officer revealed the Independent Candidate as the successful party, in Final Collect on the last day of term.

History Teacher, Christopher Tyer commented “For A Level Politics teachers and students there is nothing more exciting than a General Election and as one looked likely I knew that a Leighton Park Mock Election would be a perfect opportunity to build on and develop the students understanding of the process of an election. Our A Level students have relished the opportunity to stand on the manifestos of the major in parties and campaigning quickly began, and already the race is far too close to call. We hope that this opportunity will also boost political engagement across the School community, not just those old enough to vote.”
