Our IB and A Level Music students in the Upper Sixth know all too well the ability of music to uplift and connect people. In acknowledgement of this, they recently decided to pool their talents into creating a gift for nursing homes, to listen to during this uncertain period.
Using their recordings, which range from Debussy to The Beatles, to even some original music, the project led by Upper Sixth student, Megan, came as a response to wanting to show respect and compassion for those in the care home community. From the residents to the carers, close friends and the families who cannot visit during this period of shielding, Megan hoped to provide something of musical medicine.
Blerina Cuka, Magic Club Activities Coordinator at Brighterkind Care Home in Berkshire remarked “It is so lovely to receive, and it is very enjoyable to sit and listen to the music. It is a very difficult time at the moment and it was very thoughtful of you all to take the time for our residents.”
Rosemary Scales, Director of Music, commented “I am conscious of the power of music to raise people’s spirits at any time, but particularly during more challenging times. To hear the students performing, albeit from recordings, I found tremendously uplifting. I really hope that it will help anybody who hears their performances and I am delighted with the way the students embraced this idea, all coordinated brilliantly by Upper Sixth student Megan.”
Many of our students who have grandparents or great grandparents in care homes can relate to the hardship of being separated from them. Nevertheless, they are hugely appreciative of the work these teams are committed to each day. The care homes which have received the Radio Show have also received our face shields to help them achieve safe conditions for all.
Upper Sixth student, Megan, said “I thoroughly enjoyed working on this project because I got to experience all the talent of the Music Department and my friends, and I found it a really nice thing to work on given the unfortunate circumstances.”
Mrs Revathy Jayakumar at Northcourt Lodge Nursing Home said “The voices were absolutely brilliant; the residents and the staff really appreciated it, most of them were singing along. Please convey our heartful wishes and love to all those who sang and played an instrument.”
We hope you enjoy The LP Radio Show as much as our local care homes.
