LP Take the Title! GoPerform Rugby League Final

On Tuesday afternoon, the heavens opened to make way for the GoPerform Rugby League final. Despite the adverse weather, students and staff came out to support in their hordes, armed with umbrellas and hot chocolate. Even more impressive was the performance of the U15As, who showed determination, working as a team to secure a 12-7 victory.

“I could not be prouder of every single player today, every week they have turned up to training and given their all. It was great to see their efforts rewarded with a win. The last ten minutes of that game epitomises this team, a group of boys who work extremely hard for each other and have a never say die attitude.” commented Andy Gallacher, Head of Rugby and Athletic Development, following the incredibly close final against Reddam House.

After scoring two tries and a conversion, the boys relentlessly defended their position in the second half without conceding a try. Captained by Ashton in Year 10, who also plays for London Irish, the team consisted of three talented athletes from Year 9, besides their Year 10 peers.

Director of Sport, PE and Wellness, Jez Belas, remarked “A huge thank you to staff for coming out to support the boys win an amazing rugby match in horrific conditions! They showed amazing grit at the end to win 12-7 and take the league title. They wanted to win so badly. This is a great finish to the Rugby season this term for Andy and his team. It meant so much to the boys to have other teachers, students and parents support them.”

Flanker, Hamish, commented “The most challenging part of the game would have to be the terrible weather and the part at right at the end where we had to defend on our try line to see the game out. I feel very happy about the outcome and how far the team has come. This is just a bonus winning the final.

Casper agreed, “For me the most challenging aspect of the game was the final five minutes when they were making run after run at our line. The cold also made the game very challenging. I was very happy about the outcome as we had worked harder than ever before throughout that game and I felt like we deserved the win.

Hamish added, “Rugby at Leighton Park is taking steps in the right direction and it is looking promising for the future. This is mostly down to the hard work of Andy to take rugby at the school up a level.”

In the warmth of Fryer House, celebrations continued as the boys recognised the achievements and dedication of their Coach, Andy, before he leaves the Park to continue his rugby career in the new year. During the moving ceremony, the U15As presented Andy with a signed rugby ball from the team.

The GoPerform Rugby League was set up by Leighton Park, several years ago. It was created to provide an opportunity for schools of a similar size to compete against one another, and has now undergone three seasons, capably led by Andy. The league is eponymously named after the School’s sport performance partner, based locally in Reading. The U15As have consistently played well this season, winning 46-5 against Holyport College in the play offs and winning three of their group matches.
