Mandarin Trip to the British Museum and China Town

On 1st July Mandarin students from Year 7 and 8 set off to experience Chinese history and culture, accompanied by five of their teachers from the Modern Foreign Languages Department.

In the appropriately named groups of; Monkey, Dragon, Pig, Tiger and Lion, the students arrived at the British Museum and explored a number of galleries before visiting the Asian Ceramics, Japanese Collections and Chinese Ceramics exhibitions. Year 8 student Max said, “I was interested in the samurai armour because it relates back to Chinese history and samurai were powerful warriors.” Whilst Mia in Year 7 explained her favourite figure was Garuda because “the bird has lots of different body parts which belong to different animals.”

Lunch was enjoyed in China Town where students filled up on special fried rice, spring rolls, crispy duck pancakes and sweet and sour chicken. With satisfied stomachs students had the opportunity to practise their Mandarin, experience the Chinese cultural atmosphere and explore some of the more unusual Chinese supermarkets and shops around the restaurant.

Year 8 student Ella said of the trip “I have learnt more about the Chinese culture. I have tasted food that has been cooked traditionally and it was amazing! I have learnt about the seals which are seen as one of the highest forms of art because of their close association with calligraphy. I have also learnt that a painted dragon in blue china is quite common and that china decorated with animals often tells a story.”
