Maths Feast for our Masterminds

Putting a term of hard work to the test, on Thursday 31st March, our maths masterminds of Year 10 and Alice in Year 9, got stuck into the Maths Feast coordinated by the Advanced Mathematics Support Programme.

The team were proud to represent Leighton Park against hosts Edgbarrow, alongside Ranelagh, Bohunt Wokingham, Kendrick, Queen Anne’s and The Holt School.

The national competition is a fun educational challenge aimed at students in Year 10 which tests problem-solving and teamwork skills. Split into two teams, our students took on several rounds requiring different skills and strategies for success.

Earlier in the term, the Maths Department were keen to celebrate World Maths Day by challenging students to take on set problems in class. A number of students across Years 7 to Upper Sixth were recognised for doing particularly well.

The UK Mathematics Trust and The Young Mathematical Story Author also provided ample opportunities for the different year groups to get excited about maths with support from their teachers.

“The YMSA competition is the world’s first annual international competition set up to encourage young mathematics learners (8-15 years old) from around the world to embed their mathematics learning in a meaningful and engaging context through creating their own mathematical story picture book. This competition is organised by MathsThroughStories.org, and it has been running every year since 2019.”

Mark Budge, Maths Teacher, commented “A lot has happened in STEAM this term! …We had some fantastic entries for the Young Mathematical Story Author Competition. We will be announcing our own winners of those next term.”
