Model United Nations

On 24th June 2024, we successfully hosted a Model United Nations (MUN) conference. Joined by JMA, Blessed Hugh Faringdon and Sibford School, the day was filled with engaging debates, thoughtful speeches, and a collaborative spirit.

The main hall was transformed into a formal and dignified setting, creating an atmosphere befitting an international diplomatic conference. The decorations, seating arrangements, and overall setup were meticulously planned, contributing to the professionalism of the event.

The conference began with an inspiring and thought-provoking opening speech by Old Leightonian and former MP, Sir Tony Baldry. His words set the tone for the day’s discussions, emphasising the importance of diplomacy, critical thinking, and global awareness – as well as giving a vital context to how the UN viewed past invasions compared to the current conflict.  Sir Tony’s experience and insights were invaluable, motivating the delegates to fully engage in their roles.

Each school presented their position papers, which were well-researched and articulated the stances of their assigned countries. The level of preparation and understanding demonstrated by the students was impressive. Their ability to stay in character throughout the day, even during lunch, showed their commitment to the MUN experience.

Students engaged in critical debate, showcasing their negotiation skills, strategic thinking, and ability to collaborate. The original draft resolution was subjected to rigorous scrutiny and discussion. Through amendments and consensus-building, the document was significantly improved.

The highlight of the day was the passing of the final resolution. After a thorough debate, the resolution was put to a vote and passed with a two-thirds majority. The resolution outlined concrete steps on how the United Nations should seek to resolve conflict, reflecting the collective wisdom and diplomatic acumen of the young delegates.

The event provided a valuable platform for students to develop their public speaking, research, and diplomatic skills. It also fostered a deeper understanding of international relations and the complexities of global conflicts, as well as deepening our connection with local partner schools. It also allowed our students to exercise our values within debate, finding reason through our quaker ethos.

LP participant, Rhys (Lower Sixth), commented: “I thoroughly enjoyed being able to participate in the Model United Nations event. It was good to integrate many different schools and ages, representing different countries. The participants’ enthusiasm made the event’s atmosphere electric and a great event to be a part of. I particularly admired the ability of everyone to find common ground on the resolution despite representing different political and economic opinions and eventually achieving a majority large enough to get the resolution to be passed”.

We look forward to building on this success in future MUN conferences, continuing to provide opportunities for students to grow as global citizens and leaders. This activity is part of our wider aim to provide a curriculum and school experience that challenges our students to imagine a better world, and nurtures the changemakers of the future.
