Leighton Park’s Quaker Week is an important time in our School calendar to stop and remind ourselves about the foundations of Leighton Park as well as reflecting on the values we live by. In this week’s Collect, students and our Head of Philosophy, Religion and Values (PRV), Stephen Taynton shared their reflections of a recent trip known as Foxtrot. On the trip, they retraced the steps taken by George Fox and were able to meet students studying in other Quaker schools. Students commented that they had enjoyed the opportunity to reflect and to learn more about where the schools’ ethos came from.
The theme for the week is Simple, Radical, Spiritual, aligning with National Quaker Week which took place from 28th September to 6th October in the year that George Fox, founder of Quakerism, would have been 400 years old. In addition to their Collects, this week students have had the chance to engage with a Quaker table in Oakview at lunchtime, asking questions and picking up information about the faith. On Thursday Years 9 and 10 took part in ‘Meet A Quaker’ in their PSHE session to discover what a day-to-day commitment to Quakerism is like.
“The Meet the Quaker event was extremely successful. It goes on the back of the one we did at the Quaker Meeting House for Year 7s. We had year 9 and Year 11. They brought really interesting and thought provoking ideas and questions along. We had four Quakers and there was quite a flow of ideas and so on. It was so successful that I’m thinking of doing one again in the new year.”
Assistant Head: Pupil Personal Development, Sally Saunders, commented: “As the world continues to share more challenges, the ability to meet those with positive responses has never been more important. The ideas first proposed in the 17th century still hold true today: Simplicity, Truth, Respect, Integrity, Peace, Equality and Sustainability. These values are often the first thing Old Leightonians refer to when we meet them again and it is clear that these values have a profound impact on our students throughout their lives.”
