Reviving the 1949 School Christmas card

Imagine the delight of the staff in the Alumni Office to open a parcel and discover a collection of beautiful artwork created by Old Leightonian Michael Plunkett while he was a pupil at Leighton Park in the late 1940s, including his linocut artwork for the Christmas card.  A quick look in the collection of The Leightonian Magazine revealed the fascinating story from 1949:

The Townson Press as it was called, was given to the school, and installed in the Art Room. The Christmas card was the first project: 1500 cards were produced and sold, enabling a donation of £10 to the Friends Service Council (now Quaker Peace and Social Witness) with £5 kept to buy supplies for the press.

It was noted that “even if they never handle a composing stick again, they are learning to recognize good typography and will be able to produce intelligent suggestions for the layout of any future productions for which they may be responsible.” Valuable experience indeed!

Leighton Park has made a donation to QPSW.
