Thirty years ago, members of Leighton Park’s unbeaten 1948 Rugby Team met for a special reunion meal. Lyn Wilson writes “Grace before the dinner was:’Let us give thanks for friendships forged in the mud of Berkshire and surrounds and the journeys we have made which have led us here this evening. We are reminded of a hymn written three hundred and two years ago,’Through all the changing scenes of life, In trouble and in joy. . . ‘ and surely we have had vicissitudes and troubles over the years but also great happiness and in life’s balance sheet this evening is one of the high points of our lives’
He continued “Today in the current OL News it gave ‘Dates for your diary To be confirmed 1948 Rugby Team Reunion’. What might this mean? Well, with help from Penny Wallington six survivors from the unbeaten 1948-49 Rugby First XV gathered at Oakview for lunch (excellent food – what a contrast to yesteryear) and happy memories and conversation. It was a particular pleasure to see Gill Hopkins, daughter of our wonderful sports master Thomas Hopkins – Olympic gymnast and Welsh rugby player. It was so good to meet a number of pupils, including Chunya Munga, Head Boy and a member of the present England Under 18 Rugby team.
We toured parts of the school and were vastly impressed by the facilities and the opportunities presented for an all round education.”
