Skills for the Future. Now!

Recently, students in Year 10 and Lower Sixth took part in a two-day workshop to gain ‘Skills for the Future. Now!’. Delivered by expert environmentalists and business owners, Mark Mason and Erica Purvis, students were guided on how to use Design Thinking principles to solve a challenging brief.

The programme, developed by the School’s STEAM Co-Ordinator, Mark Budge, takes influence from important business philosophies, as well as the skills that The World Economic Forum identifies as most important for the future. These are:

  • Analytical Thinking and Innovation
  • Active Learning and Learning Strategies
  • Complex Problem Solving
  • Critical Thinking, Analysis and Creativity
  • Originality and Initiative.

Mark commented, “Over the years I have worked with students on so many different projects both individually and in teams. I have always been amazed at their wonderful ideas and creativity. However even the most able, who you just know are leaders of the future, find the actual delivery of the project a real challenge – the ability to have an idea and ‘make it fly’. Yet these are the most important of skills and these skills need to be taught.”

“The quality of the presentations I watched these students deliver was outstanding. The ideas were truly fantastic. The students have definitely shown themselves to be Change Makers of the future. The training has been a tremendous success and has evidently had significant impact for the students.”

On their second day of training, students were able to reflect on their new-found knowledge of regenerative leadership and innovative problem solving during an al fresco yoga session.

David in Year 10, reflected “It was very enjoyable to let loose and explore my creative side especially with the presentation and software ideas, I enjoyed working with others and everything about it because it opened my eyes to other ideas and made me listen more to others ideas as well because everyone has a creative side as well as you.”

Jaia added, “I thought the last two days was an interesting experience. I was able to learn things that I could apply to future projects. I enjoyed listening to the different I ideas that my team mates came up with.”

Students will now continue to develop their projects over the summer, before the school celebrates their achievements in the Autumn Term. The second stage of ‘Skills for the Future. Now!’ will then utilise the School’s local business and university links to enable students to really bring their ideas to life.
