Sports Leaders Support Ridgeway Primary
On Wednesday 29th June our dedicated student sports leaders travelled to Ridgeway Primary School to help run the sports day for pupils in KS1 and KS2. The Leighton Park students, from Year 10 and the Sixth Form, helped to run a carousel of different fun activities for the primary school to take part in. They had a range of traditional games together with some more informal activities and luckily the weather stayed fine.
The Sports Leaders Award enables students to gain skills in leadership whilst developing their physical fitness and movement capability. It is offered at Level 2 in Year 10 and at Level 3 in the Sixth Form and is an excellent qualification offered through the schools Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) programme.
“The Sports Leaders programme has really helped me to boost my confidence while leading groups of students.” enthused Ben (Year 10)
Zoe Macpherson, PE teacher and SLA Co-Ordinator, commented, “The sports leaders have to gain experience in coaching within an event situation, so going along and supporting Ridgeway Primary School Sports day, on a carousel of many sporting activities is the perfect opportunity for our students to lead on these events and progress their leadership skills further. The Ridgeway pupils were excited to see the Leighton Park students who had coached them in the eight week swim programme which was run at LP. Also, they were inspired by the students, as they cheered them on through their races and events. Feedback from staff and students of Ridgeway was superb! The progression of our students taking the sports leaders level 2 course is clear to see over the academic year. I see their confidence grow in leading, delivering sessions to the community and motivating participants to take part in their sessions. These are transferable skills which they can take further through school and work later in their lives.”
