Sports Students Raising the Bar

Our Sports Leaders Award, Level 2, offered as a part of the Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) programme to Year 10 students interested in supporting primary aged children through sport, is a fantastic opportunity to help others and for keen PE students, a great complement to their PE GCSE course.

Now that the Sixth Form are able to undertake a CTech PE qualification, the Sports Leaders Award has similarly advanced to keep step and our very first year to take on the Sports Leaders Award, Level 3, have begun their journey.

Four students in the Lower Sixth, Nic, Mia, James and Sandy, are building on their experience gained in Year 10 where they worked with pupils from local primary school, Whiteknights, to progress swimming capability in Year 5s with the aim of ensuring all students in the year group finish Year 6 able to swim a minimum distance of 10 metres. The visting pupils walked each week from Whiteknights to Leighton Park’s indoor, heated, 25m pool, where the Sports Leaders Award participants would offer coaching and encouragement.

“I’ve grown in the way that, at the start of the experience I was less confident. I wasn’t sure what I could do. However, throughout the experience I grew and even in lockdown, from that experience I gained the skills in which I could teach outside school. I actually ran a mini-running club outside school and without Whiteknights I don’t think I’d have had the confidence or the ability to do that.” Reflected Nic.

“I used to be really shy, especially talking to groups of people, so the more you do it, it just becomes more natural and you can teach people about what you know.” Added Mia.

Sports Leaders Award co-ordinator, Zoe Macpherson, who heads up both the Level 2 and Level 3 schemes at Leighton Park commented, “The sports leaders course is a superb qualification which allows our students to becoming confident leaders, who gain skills to take onto college, university and future employment. The aim for our students is: “Give more, become more!” It is fantastic to see our young leaders grow over the course duration, and be awarded the qualification at the end.”
