On Friday 10th March, Leighton Park’s Sports Scholars had the unrivalled opportunity to experience life as a pro athlete, when they set foot on St George’s Park, home to England’s 23 national football teams. A demanding training programme awaited students as they arrived at the £105m facility, set across 330 acres of Staffordshire countryside.
With access to 13 outdoor pitches, rehabilitation and sports science suites and an indoor futsal arena, the group completed a day of speed and agility testing, performance profiling, strength training and hydrotherapy recovery, alongside sport science practitioners, Game Changer Performance. Based at St George’s Park, Game Changer Performance specialise in elite athlete performance and rehabilitation.
George in Year 8 commented: “The visit to St George’s Park was really inspiring. It was great to try out the different facilities such as the hydrotherapy pool where we had to alternate between hot and cold water to help with recovery from our gym session.”
Director of Sport, Simon Bradbury, echoed: “The trip to St Georges Park was a great experience for our Sports Scholars. The last time we visited was before Covid so the majority of students had not been before. It was fantastic for them to experience things like hydrotherapy, gym recovery and functional movement testing using high class facilities that are used by all the England football teams. It was also nice to be able to look around the site and see the indoor futsal facility and both the indoor and outdoor replica pitches of Wembley.”
An active week as ever for the Sport, PE and Wellness Department, on Monday 6th March, the team took their CTEC Sport and Physical Activity students in the Lower and Upper Sixth to Go Ape, to complete their Outdoor Adventurous Activity element of Unit 18.
