On Tuesday 1st April, the exhilarating ‘Staff vs Students’ annual Hockey match unfolded on the pitch, as both sides geared up with gumshields, shin pads and sticks at the ready.
A crowd of supportive students and enthusiastic parents eagerly gathered as the whistle blew and the game commenced.
It was a very closely fought game with the students putting out their strongest side the staff have seen in years. The game remained goalless in the first half with a few chances coming at either end. The students started the second half strongly with a lot of pressure on the staff goal, but were not quite able to score. The staff then found their rhythm with a couple of attacks down the right side of the pitch, with one ending with a bit of a goal mouth scramble which saw Callum Beasley (Head of Football), poach a goal in the madness. Plenty of friendly tussles on the pitch but ultimately the staff held on to the 1-0 win which saw them extend their unbeaten streak to six years!
The staff v students annual hockey match is always such a highly anticipated and important event in the calendar for both staff and students alike. Head of Hockey and Chemistry Teacher, Matt Richards, commented on the annual event: “Across all sports and academic lessons, the students have been taught by various teachers without really seeing them play in action, and so for the staff to showcase their athletic abilities it helps the students see why the staff do what they do day in day out, and why we want to motivate the students to participate in sports and to work as a team. I think the actual event highlights the values of equality and respect that we practice each day. A lot of the staff and students on the pitch yesterday have spent a huge amount of time together around school and on sports pitches over the years, so it also acts as an enjoyable and high-spirited way to say a final goodbye to a lot of our leaving Y13 students who have given so much to hockey and sport in general to the school.
