Monday 30th June marked the final House Competition of the academic year – the much-anticipated Sports Day. Traditionally held at Palmer Park Athletics Stadium, this year’s event took place on home turf due to refurbishment works at the stadium. It was a return to school soil for one year only, the enthusiasm, energy and friendly competition from students remained just as high.
In what turned out to be one of the hottest June days on record, the decision was made to run a shortened version of Sports Day, with events limited to the morning to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all participants. Sadly, this also meant spectators were unable to attend – a difficult decision, but a necessary one given the extreme conditions. Nevertheless, the energy and camaraderie from the students more than made up for the quieter sidelines.
Events included the Javelin, Discus, Long Jump, High Jump, and longer distance races. Despite the searing heat, the sense of team spirit was palpable, with students enthusiastically collecting points for their Houses and giving their all in each event.
Simon Bradbury, Director of Sport, praised the students’ efforts: “Even in the extreme conditions the students were amazing and represented their House with pride. It was great to see two records being broken and I’m pleased we managed to complete 30 competitions, although obviously disappointed not to be able to run the full programme.”
Amongst the sporting highlights, Mia surpassed her own record from last year in the Girls’ Junior Long Jump, leaping an impressive 5.30 metres. Meanwhile, Zara etched her name into the history books by breaking a record from 2006 in the Girls’ Senior High Jump, clearing the bar just 1 centimetre higher than the previous record holder.
The overall House Competition results will be revealed during Final Collect on Wednesday 2nd July, but by the end of Monday, the winners across the three age groups were:
House Pull, a highlight of the Sports Day line up, took place in the relative cool of the following morning with representatives from across the school, including staff, in each team! The competition was hard fought, with serious exertion from all participants heaving, yanking, leaning and pulling their way to many victories en route to the final. The ultimate pull for 2025 waas between Bentsi-Enchill and Cadbury with Bentsi-Enchill inching their way to their final triumph on the rope!
A huge well done to all students for their resilience, sportsmanship, and House pride. Despite the shorter format, the morning was filled with determination, camaraderie, and memorable achievements.
