The Return of Super Chefs!

We were delighted to revive our Super Chefs cookery competition for visiting students in Year 5 with the first participants baking brilliantly in Food Tech yesterday!

The annual Super Chefs competition was launched in 2019 but was not able to run last year due to Covid. The return of four schools for a Round 1 cupcake making session involves up to 54 children in the Food Tech Room making 12 cupcakes each over the coming month; that’s a lot of cupcakes!

The first school to experience the 2021 Super Chefs event was Thameside Primary. “There was a great design choice and the icing colour was perfect!” said runner up, Roman. “The decorating was the most challenging because it was quite fiddly, but very, very fun!” reflected Jake. ‘My favourite part of Super Chefs was decorating and teamwork.” Isobel, adding “It was awesome!”

Thameside Year 5 teacher, Chloe Tubb, was attracted to the competition by the creativity and skills that are taught and hoped her students would gain teamworking skills in addition to learning how to cook. “It was something different that the children may not have experienced before,” added Bailey Mitchell, Thameside teaching assistant. “All the children enjoyed it and learned something new. Their social skills will definitely have benefitted from the experience.”

Leighton Park’s Food Tech teacher, Jennie Hatton, who delivered the session with her assistant Annie Carolan, commented, “What an absolute pleasure to meet pupils from Thameside Primary. They were beautifully behaved, they cooked some fabulous cupcakes and we look forward to seeing some of them again soon.”

“Super Chefs is the highlight of our year in Food Technology!” concluded Annie. “We love welcoming lots of young future chefs and seeing what fun creative things they can come up with!”
