At Leighton Park, we are thrilled to be celebrating Chinese New Year, which this year takes place on Wednesday 29th January.
This year, we mark the arrival of the Year of the Snake, a time that symbolises wisdom, elegance, and transformation. The snake is often associated with introspection, cleverness, and intuition, making this a great opportunity for reflection and growth within our school community, aligning seamlessly with our school values.
The main event took place on the day itself, when the whole School came together to enjoy a traditional Chinese banquet in Oakview. All students and staff were treated to a special Chinese lunch including egg fried rice, noodles, stir fry, chicken wings, prawn crackers and ribs. Without forgetting a zesty mango cheesecake, as well as fortune cookies! The lunch was completed with fortune cookies, with everyone receiving some lucky words for the year ahead.
In the lead-up to the big day, we hosted a special trip for our boarders to London’s vibrant Chinatown on Saturday 25th January. This trip was a fantastic opportunity for the boarders to immerse themselves in the sights, sounds, and tastes of Chinese culture as they enjoyed exploring the bustling streets and celebrating, as well as a spot of shopping.
Looking ahead, we have one last celebration on Friday 31st January with a trip to local Chinese restaurant Memories of Sichuan for a Chinese New Year Celebration Dinner. This dinner is open to both our boarders and day students, providing an opportunity for everyone to join in the festive celebrations and enjoy some delicious Sichuan cuisine in the heart of Reading.
Chinese New Year at Leighton Park is a time for celebration and community, as we embrace the wisdom and grace of the Year of the Snake and look forward to all the growth and opportunities that 2025 holds.
