Freida (Year 7) is delighted to have achieved phenomenal success with her original composition ‘Yellow Skies’ in the SoundCloud Young Songwriter Competition 2020. Her song has made the Top 40 in this year’s 8-12 Years category, competing against almost 200 other entries from young songwriters nationwide.
“My inspiration for the song was mainly about how I feel about my friends and how good friends support me. It was also about a friend who is very positive and it’s like she is in her own world which is so beautiful and bright it makes everything better.” Said Freida. “When I found out I was one of the finalists I felt so happy! I had been searching the website to find the results and when I saw my name on their I was ecstatic because I felt like my music had been appreciated.”
Rosemary Scales, Director of Music, enthused, “This is a fantastic achievement and we are keeping our fingers crossed for the final results. It’s very exciting!”
SoundCloud is a free online global community of audio artists including songwriters, bands, solo performers, creators and listeners. Their aim to encourage young songwriters and to recognise talent is realised through their annual event, the ‘Song Academy Young Songwriter’. They market themselves as ‘the leading international songwriting competition for 8-18 year olds’ and it is a fantastic encouragement for any budding songwriter to be selected as a finalist in such a well-regarded competition.
Regardless of the eventual outcome, Frieda’s achievement could be the first step on her journey to an international career in music. “I do have future ambitions for songwriting.” She reflected, “It is one of my main passions and my goal is to share my music with the world and I feel one step closer by becoming a finalist.”
