Our Chemists are Top of the Bench

Congratulations to our 4 budding Chemists from across Years 9-11, who represented us at the Thames Valley, Top of the Bench heats on Wednesday 20th November. Awarded an incredible 3rd place out of 15 schools, we were only 1 point behind the top two teams, who gained joint 1st with a score of 37/40.

The Royal Society of Chemistry’s annual competition for schools challenged teams to take part in a series of activities including thin layer chromatography.

Adam Ball, Head of Chemistry praised the team for their admirable effort saying “This has been an excellent opportunity for our students to showcase their knowledge and practise their chemistry skills outside of the classroom. The team made some brilliant decisions and I am very proud of everyone who was involved.”

Year 11 competitor, David commented “I think the competition was very intense, at the same time very interesting. I was quite stressed during the competition but it allowed me to improve myself in a very short time by trying out the best way to carry out experiments. I would consider this to be an extremely valuable experience and would highly recommend others to go.”

Esther, Year 9 also reflected “Going to the chemistry trip was very fun and challenged me to use scientific thinking and quick problem-solving skills.”
