UKMT: Precision, Fluency and Mathematical Problem Solving

Students in Years 9 and 10 were enthusiastic about the UK Maths Trust Intermediate Maths Challenge today as they tackled 60 minutes of mathematical puzzles and problems.  The Challenge consists of 25 multiple choice questions and according to the UK Maths Trust is designed to “encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought and fluency to make students think.”

Will Maxwell, Deputy Head of Maths, one of Leighton Park’s most popular Sixth Form subjects at both IB and A Level agreed: “It gives everyone the opportunity to extend themselves in different ways so there is a lot more pure logical thinking, rather than just what has been taught by the teacher. For example, you can have the people in the top sets score brilliantly but it also allows people who are not necessarily assessment driven academically to come out with some really good results from it because it gives them a space to shine. There is some outside the box thinking in mathematics solving some real-life problems; a huge amount of problem solving really but it is set up as multiple-choice questions so it takes some of the stress out of it.”

Well done to everyone who took part and we look forward to seeing how our students do when the results come out later this term!
