Year 8 Visit the Imperial War Museum

Year 8s ventured to the Imperial War Museum in London on Tuesday 28th June as they marked the end of their World War I classroom studies with a fieldtrip! The group were excited to visit the capital and to enjoy the amazing array of artefacts and exhibitions on offer at such a well curated museum. For many, the highlight of the trip was the workshop with the IWM team during the morning who explained how documentaries sharing historical stories are put together and gave our students a chance to make their own films focussing on particular exhibits.

Sally Saunders, History teacher, explained, “The students loved taking part in a Documentary Challenge which aims to take students out of the classroom and into IWM’s galleries to explore objects and tell those stories in their own words. Briefed by Reena, a filmmaker for SMASH TV, students were given smart-cameras and tasked with making mini documentaries on the people and objects they feel the world needs to know about. There was also an opportunity to visit other galleries within the museum, including a new exhibition to mark the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II, which was very topical.”
