A Levels at a Glance
The A Level programme at Leighton Park is a great opportunity to study the subjects you enjoy in greater depth and prepare you for the future.
Here’s what you need to know.
- You can choose three or four subjects from a range of 18, including Maths, English Literature, the sciences and humanities. Plus some you won’t have studied at GCSE, like Psychology, Business, Economics and Politics
- You’ll have 11 or 12 lessons each fortnight, plus around five hours of independent study per subject, every week
- Your teachers will be on hand to guide you throughout, always available for 1-2-1 support when you need it
- Leighton Park Sixth Formers achieve the best academic progress in Berkshire, with the School in the top 14 boarding schools in England. In 2025 68% of students achieved A*/B
Sixth Form Life
In the Sixth Form you’ll enjoy everything Leighton Park has to offer with added independence in your life and learning.
With small tutor groups, normally 11 students, you’ll get close individual support from your tutor, who will oversee your academic and personal development. And while your teachers will be on hand to support you with expert advice, you’ll take charge of your own A Level studies.
Our house system gives you a community to be part of from the start, with fun events, student socials and competitions to bring everyone together.
And as a Sixth Former, you’ll be spending a lot of time in our new Sixth Form Student Centre. With a double height library, a lecture theatre, video conferencing studio, café, common rooms, classrooms and group study hubs, it’s been designed to support your success in every way.
Subject Finder
Browse our range of A Level courses to get a feel for what’s available. Students usually study for three qualifications, but if one of your three subjects is Maths, then Further Maths can be taken as a fourth. And there are options to take a Modern Foreign Language as an additional IB module.
Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
We encourage all our A Level students to take an EPQ – an independent research project worth half an A Level and highly valued by universities. It’s a great opportunity to delve deeper into any topic that interests you, with the freedom to explore it in any way you choose. The output could be an extended essay or a physical piece that you’ve designed and created.
You’ll have scheduled support from a supervisor and dedicated sessions to help you hone your skills in critical thinking, academic referencing and time management; everything you need to carry out your research project. Not to mention the full use of our extensive facilities.
Personal Development
We believe that achievement shines brightest when it spans the different aspects of your character and flows from your own desire to develop and grow.
As well as games twice a week, you can choose from nearly 100 co-curricular clubs to learn new skills, stretch yourself and make friends for life. Whether your interests lie in music, the performing arts, sport or elsewhere, there’s something for you. And as a Sixth Former, you’ll also have the opportunity to lead activities.
Meanwhile, our Oakleaf Diploma teaches strong values, builds character and instils a sense of community in our Sixth Formers. All the skills that are so valuable in later life and lay the foundations for future changemakers.
