Frequently Asked Questions
| Who can board at Leighton Park? |
|---|
| Boarding is open to students aged 11–18 from around the world, with around 40% UK-based and 47 countries represented. Students can be Full or Weekly Boarders, with students in Years 7-9 also having the option to flexi board. |
| How are boarders supported academically and pastorally? |
| Every house has a team of five teachers who live on-site and care for students like a family. This structure provides continuity between the school day, evenings and weekends, helping students and teachers to really get to know each other. Our boarding students consistently make greater academic progress than our day students. |
| Can boarders use phones and stay in touch with home? |
| All students have their laptops to support their academic work. Boarders in Years 7-11 store phones in their boarding houses during the day and can have access to them during set hours. Phones are handed in before bed time to ensure a good nights’ sleep. If students need their phones to contact home, for example at lunch times, then this can be arranged. Sixth formers are given more freedom to have their mobiles during the school day but within clear boundaries. |
| What facilities and weekend activities are available? |
| You’ll have access to recording studios, art and filmmaking studios, 25m swimming pool, sports fields and cardio and strength & conditioning suites. Weekend activities include trips to watch professional sports like Premier League football, professional basketball and Wimbledon. You’ll visit London, Oxford and other exciting English cities. Go to watch a West End theatre show, visit Thorpe Park with the biggest roller coaster rides in Europe, try Go Karting, Paintballing or relax with friends going Bowling or watching the latest films at the cinema. Older students can go into Reading with their friends, or go to London and Oxford to check out the world-leading universities, spectacular galleries and museums or indulge in a little shopping. |
| Is boarding safe? |
| Our 65 acres of beautiful parkland is secure, with controlled access and advanced security systems. Leighton Park has outstanding safeguarding and pastoral care to ensure that students are safe and well cared for. |
| What is the food like? |
|
At Leighton Park, three balanced meals a day are served in the bright, social Oakview restaurant - ensuring every boarder starts and ends the day well-nourished. Menus are crafted in partnership with our caterers Thomas Franks, focusing on local, seasonal, nutritious ingredients, freshly prepared with minimal processed foods and thoughtful cooking techniques. Whether you're vegetarian, vegan, halal, Kosher, or managing allergies, tailored meals meet your dietary needs. There are four hot meal options at lunch and tea time, with additional salad and pasta bars offering more options, as well as soups and desserts. At weekends, Boarders enjoy a later start and brunch to set them up for a day of fun. Boarders love the community feel, with shared meals fostering connection, and kitchen baking challenges add fun and flavour to boarding life. You'll enjoy wholesome, delicious food designed to fuel your day academically, socially, and personally - every single day. |
| Will I have my own room or share with other students? |
|
Younger students in Years 7-11 will share a room with one or two other students of the same year group. The boys’ senior boarding house has some large boarding rooms with four beds. Students in Years 7-9 in Fryer House have ensuite bedrooms. Students in the Sixth Form will usually have their own bedroom. There are a handful of two bed rooms but these usually go to students who have requested to share. |
| What different types of boarding are on offer? |
|
We offer a range of boarding options to suit your family’s needs and lifestyle.
For added flexibility, our flexi-boarding option allows you to stay with us for a minimum of two nights. You might like to know that we’re also a boarding school without exceats, which means we don’t close the school during term time. |
| What will I do in the evenings and weekends? |
|
Everyone looks forward to the evenings and weekends, when you’ll have the freedom to explore your hobbies and interests. And enjoy some well-deserved time off. It’s a perfect mix of organised and free time, including prep time, co-curricular activities and fun trips. There’s a huge range of things to do, whether you’re taking advantage of the School’s extensive resources and facilities, or venturing further afield to visit the local attractions. As you’re boarding near London and Oxford, you’ll have the chance to catch pro sports games, explore cultural spots in London, visit theme parks and have fun with activities like go-karting and paintball. |
| Can I stay fit and healthy while boarding? |
|
We know just how important it is to fuel your body and your mind, which is why healthy eating is so high on our agenda. A choice of nourishing, balanced meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner will set you up for whatever the day has in store. With games twice a week and more than 30 sports and active clubs in our co-curricular programme, there are plenty of opportunities to stay active and try new things. Choose from our key sports: football, hockey and netball. Or try Judo, dance, rock climbing, water sports, swimming, yoga; there’s something for everyone. |
Being a boarder gave me a more involved school experience. At university I find myself talking about school and ‘house life’ with an affection that is obviously alien to so many other people.
