Autumn Term Sport Round Up

A fantastic first term for sport with no less than 135 fixtures being played in the Autumn term most definitely helped by the mild weather we have had.

Hockey:

On the astro, 120 girls across the school have played 75 fixtures this term with a positive winning percentage.

The Fryers had a busy term with the U12A team who, as a group, only lost one game all term with an average of 4 goals scored per match! The standout moment had to be the U13 girls winning gold in the ISA trophy held at the Olympic Hockey park against 30 other schools.

The U15s were the standout team in the school as they had a stellar season achieving a 91% win rate with 11 games won and just 1 lost. Whilst finishing 5th out of 32 schools at the ISA tournament at the Olympic park was a huge moment for the girls, the most important news was our U15s won the Berkshire schools league. They came top of their group in the season which qualified them for finals day last week where they cruised through the semi-final and then won the final against Crosfields on shootouts. This is a talented and exciting group of young players.

The U18 2nd Team had over 20 girls in the squad, making selection very challenging each week. Highlights include a solid 5-0 win against LVS earlier in the term and a 2-1 win against Shiplake.

Our U18 1st Team played 14 games and only lost two, finishing 4th in the league and ended the season strong with a 3-0 win against Shiplake in the Under the Lights game.  It is testament to Matt Richards (Head of Hockey) and his coaching staff that eight students have made it into the county set up for this year, as well a student playing for U16 England squad! See our student achievement section below for more details.

Rugby:

Rugby at Leighton Park has enjoyed another highly successful season with over 70 boys taking to the field. What has been especially rewarding is seeing boys of all sizes and sporting backgrounds participating, with many of them picking up a rugby ball for the very first time and embracing the challenge.

The U14s had highlights of an impressive 61-27 victory over Park House School and the Senior 1XV lead the way with a 100% win rate.  The boys started off in S3 and after only two games we were asked to move up to S2 against stiffer opposition.  Despite very few Year 13’s being in the team and several Year 11 boys being in the starting XV, all their games in S2 were won against the likes of Holyport, Salesians and Burnham Grammar.

The Senior Team highlights included:

  • A dominant 53-10 victory over Claires Court, resulting in being moved up into S2.
  • Winning 8 games out of 9 games.
  • An impressive 76-3 win against Sherfield.

Fryer Football:

Fryer football has seen many boys representing the school this term, which has been fantastic to see.

The U13A team has had the strongest season winning 6 out of their 7 matches against Pangbourne, Shiplake, Cranford and St Gabriels. The U12A team have settled into LP well with some promising talent in this year group and wins over Pangbourne, Holyport, St Joseph’s and Luckly twice. In the B teams it was great to see students representing the school for the first time and genuinely being competitive within their fixtures, finishing second in the league.

Basketball:

Away from the astro and field our senior basketball team have had a superb season.  With a strong starting five of James, Illy, Charles, Michael and Harry the boys have won all of their matches against Forest, Kennet and Maiden Erlegh Wokingham, therefore currently sitting at the top of the league.

Swimming:

In the swimming pool we had three students that represented London West at the ISA National Finals.  Josh won his year 7 backstroke race making him national champion and there were also medals for Kian and Cataleya at the event, which went towards London West being crowned national champions.

We also hosted a girls swimming gala here at LP, which was a fantastic opportunity for friendly competition against neighbouring schools and extra swimming experience.

Exceptional student achievements:

Notable mentions much go to Jacob (Upper Sixth) who has represented England Floorball men’s team this term and to George (Year 11) for his U16s England Hockey. Evie (Year 9) continues to cycle at a national level and Raph (Year 8) is now top 50 in the country for 5k recently winning the Woodley Adult Parkrun in a time of 18 minutes 19 seconds.  Pretty impressive for a 12-year-old! Laurie (Lower Sixth) is still playing in the Northampton Saints Rugby Development Programme and Faris () competed in the European Golf Tour. Theo (Year 10), Cataleya (Year 7), Kian (Lower Sixth) and Josh (Year 7) are all county swimmers, wit Josh being a County Swim Champion whilst we also have eight County Hockey players, including: Sam (Year 9), Jacob (Year 8), Abi (Year 10), Abi (Year 11), Hermione (Year 11), George (Year 11), Chloe (Year 11) and Elisa (Year 11). Furthermore, three students are playing rugby at county level, including: Brian (Lower Sixth), Elliot (Lower Sixth) and Casper (Upper Sixth).
