This week our four winners of the Quaker Week Poetry Competition have been announced! Their prizes were £50 each to the charity of their choice.
Head of Philosophy, Religious Studies and Values (PRV) and competition organiser, Stephen Taynton was delighted to have so many worthy submissions. “The group gave us poems which were all very individual but all had the similar theme of love, and what that means to them.” he explained.
Having joined a local cricket club when he was 10, Ethan (Year 9) now plays country cricket for Oxfordshire and for Kidmore End Cricket Club. “I love cricket and it’s something I’m very passionate about. It’s something I wanted to share in the form of a poem. I felt pretty surprised and very glad when I found out I’d won it. ‘All Dogs Matter’ is my House charity for Bentsi-Enchill so I thought I’d help it by giving it the money to it.”
Sofia (Year 9) wrote about the vacillation often found within relationships between teenagers and their parents saying: “There are some times that I really hate my mum and other times I really love her because she is my best friend. I didn’t expect to win!” Sofia has nominated Sheffield Children’s Hospital as her chosen charity because she loves children.
Our Head of English, Jessica Boswell, wrote a beautiful poem about an inked heart which represented a bond of love focussing on her sons, William and Teddy. Her chosen charity is Tommy’s which funds research into miscarriages, still birth and premature birth. “It felt fitting because I’ve been very blessed to have my children in my life and not everyone has an easy journey to that.” said Jess.
Kierat (Year 9) wrote an inspiring poem about all types of love and where love can be found. Her chosen charity is the British Heart Foundation supporting a great cause with meaning for Kierat and her family.
Stephen presented the winners with certificates on Thursday 13th November and we look forward to see more poetry from our talented writers next year!
