The first concert of the new academic year was delivered with aplomb to a select but delighted audience.
With five talented soloists on stage, the performances included concertos for the bassoon, cello and saxophone, with piano accompaniment and Vivaldi’s exciting Concerto for two cellos was accompanied by the LP String Ensemble. Vivaldi, Haydn and Binge were the composers on show as students from Year 10 to Lower Sixth performed their pieces.
Luke Walters, Head, enthused, “Absolutley outstanding! It was a real pleasure to witness my first concert here. It was fantastic, every single performer giving it their all. Some exceptional pieces chosen and delivered with verve and piquancy; what an absolute pleasure!”
Senior Deputy Head, Eddie Falshaw, added: “What a phenomenal first concert of the year, amazing talent, great variety, just what we needed after a very, very busy first four and a half weeks back!”
Alice (Lower Sixth) who played Vivaldi’s Concerto in E Minor on her bassoon, has recently been selected for the BBC Proms series with the National Youth Orchestra in August and also attends specialist training each weekend at the Junior Royal Academy of Music. Her latest musical accolade is a successful audition for the Junior Royal Academy Chamber Choir. Director of Music, Rosemary Scales, commented: “This is another fantastic achievement for Alice. She is achieving incredible standards on both the bassoon and now her voice.”
The Music Department are also very proud that three students have recently joined the English Schools Orchestra (ESO) scheduled to play at the Cadogan Hall in half term. The programme will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the ESO and includes the enchanting overture to Humperdinck’s ‘Hansel and Gretel’, Vasks’ powerful ‘Credo’, and Mahler’s monumental ‘Symphony No 1’.
