Congratulations to our Leighton Park Debating Team, who have been crowned Champions of the Oxford Debating Matters Championship!
The day began with Naina and David opening strongly against King Edward VI School, delivering authoritative speeches on the motion “Misinformation from Tech Companies Should Be Regulated.” Following this, Kit and Riordan delivered compelling and commanding arguments on “Trial by Jury Should Be Removed in Some Cases,” securing Leighton Park’s place in the final.
In a thrilling championship round, Ethan and William, both first-time competitive debaters, gave an impressive and energetic performance against Cirencester College, ultimately sealing the victory for Leighton Park.
David, also a first-time competitor, expressed his delight at contributing to the team’s journey to the final and was honoured to receive special recognition from the judges, alongside Kit.
Judge Dr Marie Daouda of Oriel College praised the team, stating: “Leighton Park students show an impressive ability to improvise on accurate and eloquent responses.” Dr Emily Randall of the University of Gloucestershire echoed the sentiment, noting: “Excellent structure and articulation of arguments.”
It was a fabulous day of debating for our LP team, who not only walked away as Champions, but also gained invaluable experience, enhanced their confidence and strengthened their skills throughout the competition.
