31 students, our biggest ever group cohort, successfully completed their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award practice expedition in Snowdonia during the May bank holiday weekend.
The group demonstrated incredible resilience, teamwork and determination throughout a challenging and rewarding few days in the mountains. Despite the exceptionally hot weather, students rose to the challenge superbly, navigating long days across rugged terrain while carrying full expedition packs. Their efforts were rewarded with endless panoramic views across the peaks and valleys of Snowdonia, providing unforgettable moments along the route.
One of the highlights of the expedition was the opportunity to experience beautiful wild camping in the heart of the Welsh landscape. As the sun set over the mountains, students were able to enjoy the tranquillity and sense of achievement that comes from living and working independently in the outdoors.
The school’s Outdoor Education Manager and DofE leader, Isaac Walker, commented: “Throughout the expedition, students showed excellent teamwork, supporting one another through demanding conditions and maintaining high spirits throughout. The practice expedition has provided invaluable preparation ahead of the assessed Gold expedition, and all our students should feel extremely proud of what they have achieved.”
Intrepid adventurer, Megan (Lower Sixth), reflected: “I loved the wild camping aspect, I’ve never done it before and I was quite nervous but waking up surrounded by nature was amazing. I also found it super cool drinking from a river for the first time. I found the heat the most challenging, my team and I had to really focus on staying safe in the sun and frequently taking breaks. This all taught us about teamwork and responsibility; not only were we responsible for ourselves but for our whole team. DofE is an amazing opportunity, sometimes it’s tough but it’s so rewarding in the long run. The expeditions are amazing but also the other aspects like the skills and volunteering are wonderful. The staff who run it are also so supportive. If you are not sure whether to do it or not, I would say do it; push yourself and you will feel amazing.”
