ECNAIS Debate Conference – Lisbon

The ECNAIS Debate Conference in Lisbon began with an opportunity for students to explore the city’s rich culture and history. Highlights included sightseeing around Castelo de São Jorge, dining at the vibrant Time Out Market, visiting Pink Street, and participating in team-building activities.

Following some last-minute preparations, the team drew as the A Team, the only UK team in the competition, debating against strong opponents from Bulgaria, Portugal, Turkey, the Czech Republic, and Romania.

The first debate motion, “Schools should have surveillance cameras in all classrooms and public spaces,” saw the team confidently take the proposition side. They delivered a compelling argument, exploring the broader implications of moving toward a surveillance-based society within educational environments.

In the second round, the team debated the motion, “Nuclear energy is the answer to Europe’s energy crisis,” followed by “The EU should have an elected president.” Riordan (Lower Sixth) led his debate with courage and eloquence. David Hammond (Debate Lead) remarked, “This is Riordan at his most masterful, charismatic and persuasive. His best yet.” Alex (Lower Sixth) )also delivered an incredibly impressive speech, while Annabelle (Year 11) concluded the case with clarity and professionalism as the closing speaker.

The team ultimately secured an impressive fifth-place finish. Beyond this achievement, they demonstrated exceptional dedication, teamwork, and a continued commitment to developing their debating skills. The school is immensely proud of both their performance and their ongoing growth.
